About UAE Traffic Fines & Black Points
The UAE enforces a federal black points system in which demerit points are added to a driver's licence for each traffic violation. Accumulating 24 points within 12 months results in a 3-month licence suspension. A second offence leads to a 6-month suspension, and a third results in a 1-year suspension with a mandatory requalification course.
Fines listed here are based on Dubai RTA and Federal Decree-Law No. 14 of 2024, effective March 2025. Exact amounts may vary by emirate or severity. Always check with the relevant traffic authority for the most current figures.
Frequently Asked Questions
When do black points expire?
Black points typically expire 12 months after the date of the violation, provided no further violations are recorded. Drivers may also reduce up to 8 points annually by completing an RTA-approved traffic awareness course.
Can I pay traffic fines online?
Yes. Dubai fines can be paid through the Dubai Police website, the RTA app, or at designated kiosks and banking outlets. Abu Dhabi residents can use the TAMM platform or the Abu Dhabi Police app.
Is there an early payment discount on fines?
Dubai Police has historically offered a 25% discount on fines paid within a specified period. Check the official Dubai Police or RTA websites for current promotions, as these change periodically.
What happens to my vehicle if it is impounded?
Impoundment periods vary by violation severity — typically 7 to 90 days. To reclaim the vehicle, the owner must pay storage fees in addition to any outstanding fines and penalties. In serious cases, a court order may be required.
