About the Expat Dependent Levy
Since July 2017, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia implements a dependent levy on expatriates working in the private sector. The fee is charged per dependent and must be paid in advance when issuing or renewing an Iqama (residence permit).
As of the latest updates, the dependent fee is stable at 400 SAR per dependent per month. This means for a standard 1-year (12-month) Iqama renewal, an expatriate will pay 4,800 SAR for each dependent.
Frequently Asked Questions
Who is considered a dependent?
Dependents include your wife, sons under 18, and unmarried daughters. Any immediate family members sponsored under your Iqama are considered dependents.
How is the fee paid?
The dependent fee must be paid upfront through the SADAD payment system via your local Saudi bank account before your employer can renew your Iqama.
Is the dependent fee refundable?
Generally, dependent fees are non-refundable even if the dependents leave the country before the Iqama expires, unless an explicit refund is processed through government channels for un-used services.
Can the fee be paid monthly?
By default, the fee is linked to the Iqama renewal cycle. While recent changes allow quarterly business permits, independent family fee payment rules vary and it is commonly paid as a bulk sum during the renewal timeframe.
