About Saudi Iqama Fees
The Iqama system (Resident Identity) in Saudi Arabia involves various fees paid to multiple government entities, primarily the Ministry of Interior (Jawazat) and the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development.
Under law, employers are required to pay the base Iqama issuance and renewal fees, as well as the monthly Work Permit fee (Expat Levy). Dependent fees (SAR 400 per month per dependent) are typically the responsibility of the expat employee, unless otherwise agreed.
Saudi Arabia introduced flexibility allowing Iqama renewal in 3, 6, 9, or 12-month increments for commercial workers, easing the cash flow burden compared to the previous mandatory 1-year prepayment.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Who pays the sponsorship transfer fee?
- According to Saudi Labour Law, the new employer is responsible for paying the sponsorship transfer fees. The cost is SAR 2,000 for the first transfer, SAR 4,000 for the second, and SAR 6,000 for the third and subsequent transfers.
- What happens if I delay renewing my Iqama?
- Missing your renewal results in an initial SAR 500 fine. Repeated delays can lead to SAR 1,000 fines and eventually deportation. Corporate-sponsored expats should ensure their companies renew on time to avoid bank account freezes.
- Does the Expat Levy apply to everyone?
- No. Domestic workers (e.g. maids, private drivers) and industrial workers are exempt from the Work Permit fee. However, regular commercial company employees must pay it, with the rate depending on the Saudization ratio (Nitaqat) of the firm.
- How is the Exit Re-entry visa calculated?
- A single entry visa costs SAR 200 for up to 2 months, plus SAR 100 for each additional month. A multiple entry visa costs SAR 500 for up to 3 months, plus SAR 200 for each additional month.
